Manufacturing contracted for a second consecutive month in September with widespread declines by industry, the Institute for Supply Management said. The Tempe, Ariz.-based group’s manufacturing index, known as the PMI, fell to 47.8 percent last month, down from 49.1 percent in August. It was the lowest PMI reading since June 2009. The index is a leading indicator and is viewed as a barometer of where manufacturing is headed.

Machine Roof Bellows Contain Dust
Dynatect’s retractable machine roof bellows contains machining dust, debris and noise. The self-supporting bellows cover uses low-friction bearings to easily glide on a rail system, adaptable for any machine way or rail. The translucent bellows still allows light to pass through. Roof covers are commonly used in large machining centers to prevent environmental contamination, such as in the milling of aerospace components.

CMTS Looks at Manufacturing's Future
Part of SME’s CMTS event focused on how technology is affecting manufacturing’s future. One keynote session dealt with how manufacturers need to concentrate on the use of data and intellectual property. “The basis of wealth and power is based on the control of data and intellectual property,” saidJim Balsillie, chair of the Council of Canadian Innovators. At another session, an executive of software company Salesforce.com said manufacturing lags other industries in adopting digital technology. “The ability to adapt is critical," said Andrew Witherspoon a Salesforce vice president. "All this technology coming at you.”

Manufacturing Execution Systems
You’ve implemented a popular brand of ERP software. Your PLM system is humming like a well-tuned sports car. You have CAD/CAM and TMS and toolpath simulation software in place, and all your people have been trained on its use. You’ve spent boatloads of money on software and consultants, have all the correct systems in place, and yet you blew an important delivery date last week and you still walk out to the shop several times a day to check on jobs. What gives? Chances are good that it’s time to take the next big step towards production nirvana by implementing a Manufacturing Execution System (MES).

How to improve quality consistency in additive manufacturing
A challenge in additive manufacturing is ensuring consistent quality. Often physical parts fail or crack during or after manufacturing. MSC simulation technology enables designers with virtual prototypes to replicate additive manufacturing trials and visually review mechanical behaviors such as distortions and residual stresses that contribute to failure. With new visibility into the causes of a failure, designers and engineers can ensure consistent quality.
