Taking Stainless Steel Machining to the Next Level

Taking Stainless Steel Machining to the Next Level

Stainless steel is well known in machine shops. Yet, particularly in automotive and aerospace applications, tools and cutting methods continually evolve to optimize output—particularly as parts get more complex. With aerospace components, a bracket that might have been a separate component is likely to be incorporated into a larger part, requiring more machine precision and flexibility. Contributing Editor Geoff Giordano examines how stainless steel machining is changing..

Machine Tool Orders Plunge in November

Machine Tool Orders Drop in November

The value of machine tool orders dropped in November as makers pared prices to cut inventory, according to a monthly report. Orders totaled $320 million for the month, AMT – The Association for Manufacturing Technology said. That was down 15 percent from an adjusted $376.1 million for October. AMT said the number of machine tool units only fell by 3 percent on a monthly basis. That reflected "an aggressive move by sellers to reduce inventory," according to the organization.

UAW Talks With Detroit Automakers Failed to Dramatically Change the Status Quo

UAW Talks With Detroit Automakers Failed to Dramatically Change the Status Quo

The 2019 negotiations between the United Auto Workers and Detroit-area automakers didn’t make major changes in the labor situation at the companies, a panel of labor analysts and former executives said. In particular, the talks didn’t alter the health care dynamic for the companies. UAW members at the companies contribute less to their health care than workers in other industries. Two Paths to Toolpath Evolution

Two Paths to Toolpath Evolution

The evolution of toolpath development has taken two routes. One developed from a traditional machining approach that applied a 50 percent stepover as a rule of thumb to today’s dynamic machining. In dynamic machining, CAM developers started with radial chip thinning principles and created software that constantly adjusted the toolpath, axial depth of cut, and/or removal rate to maintain constant engagement and consistent chips. The other route marries CAM software to a specific cutting tool to achieve accelerated machining. Contributing Editor Ed Sinkora has more.

Study: Manufacturers Want More Flexibility With 3D Printing

Study: Manufacturers Want More Flexibility With 3D Printing

A study finds that 99 percent of manufacturing executives surveyed believe "an open ecosystem" is important to advance 3D printing at scale, Essentium Inc. said. Until now, the industrial additive manufacturing (AM) market has been dominated by closed systems where customers are locked into vendors’ hardware, processes and materials. Manufacturers are now demanding open ecosystems to overcome system inflexibility and use the materials of their choice, according to Essentium, a developer of AM solutions.
