Manufacturing Contracts for Fourth Straight Month, ISM Says

The manufacturing economy contracted for the fourth consecutive month in November, the Institute for Supply Management said in a monthly report. The group said the pattern may continue until there's a pickup in new orders for manufactured goods. “Demand is the big story,” Timothy R. Fiore, chair of ISM’s Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said on a conference call. Until demand improves, he said, “This is where we’re going to be.”

Manufacturing Employment Surges After End of GM Strike


Manufacturing employment surged by 54,000 jobs in November following the end of a 40-day strike at General Motors Co., the U.S. Labor Department said. Motor vehicles and parts added 41,300 jobs, the bureau said. It was the manufacturing category that added the most jobs by far. GM employees represented by the United Auto Workers union walked off the job in mid-September and didn't return until the end of October.
