A Big Week for Boeing

Manufacturing expanded in October as new orders, production and employment all improved, the Institute for Supply Management said. The group's manufacturing index increased to 59.3 percent, its highest level in two years. The index, known as the PMI, is considered a barometer of where manufacturing is heading. Timothy Fiore, chair of ISM's Manufacturing Business Survey Committee, said the index represents a "demand-driven expansion." The index has been in positive territory for five consecutive months.

Boeing Plans More Job Cuts in 2021
Aircraft maker Boeing Co. said it plans an additional 10 percent job cut next year. CEO David Calhoun told workers that Boeing's head count will be about 130,000 by the end of 2021, down from about 145,000 currently. Boeing also reported a third-quarter loss as its commercial aircraft deliveries declined compared with 2019's third quarter.

Ford Motor Reports a Third-Quarter Earnings Rebound
Ford Motor Co. said its third-quarter profit rebounded on sales of pickups and SUVs. The automaker's profit totaled $2.39 billion, up from $425 million a year earlier. Ford attributed the results to its 2018 decision to emphasize selling trucks and to phase out sedans. However, the company also cautioned some bumps remain.

Caterpillar Inc., the maker of heavy construction and mining equipment, reported a sharply lower third-quarter profit as demand for the company’s products dropped. Durable Goods Orders Rise on Transportation
Durable goods orders rose in September on transportation equipment, the U.S. Commerce Department said. Orders rose 1.9 percent, according to a monthly report. It was the fifth consecutive monthly gain. Excluding transportation, orders rose 0.8 percent.
