Manufacturing Returns to Economic Expansion in January

Manufacturing returned to economic expansion in January, helped by gains in new orders and production, the Institute for Supply Management said. The Tempe, Ariz.-based group’s manufacturing index, known as the PMI, reached 50.9 percent, according to a monthly report. That was up from 47.8 percent in December. The results snapped a five-month streak of economic contraction. The January number also is in line with ISM’s forecast for an expanding manufacturing economy in 2020.

Stratasys Survey: 3D Printing Use Expands


Use of additive manufacturing, or 3D printing, is expanding, with users looking to do more metal printing, Stratasys Direct Manufacturing said, citing a survey of users of the technology. “As more metal AM technologies emerge onto the scene, the diversity of metal alloys has increased significantly,” Stratasys Direct said in a report prepared with SME Media. Almost all, 98 percent, of respondents said they expect to keep using 3D printing. Of that group, 75 percent said they expect to increase use of 3D printing in 2020 compared with 2019.

Manufacturing Loses 12,000 Jobs in January, Paced by Motor Vehicles


U.S. manufacturers cut 12,000 jobs in January, led by a loss of jobs in the motor vehicles sector. Makers of vehicles and parts pared 10,600 jobs, according to a breakdown by sector issued by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Makers of durable goods cut 11,000 jobs for the month. Manufacturing was a weak link in an overall strong monthly jobs report which saw job gains better than forecast by economists.
